Mythological Creatures of the Sea

The remarkable octagonal font (AD 1405-7) at St Clement’s, Sandwich, features a number of bas-relief carvings on each of its faces which includes the town’s coat of arms, a Merchant’s Mark and this little fella, described as a ‘merman in a whelk’ (Rosseter 1986). Its symbolism seems to have been lost to the mists of time but it almost certainly references the town’s past as one of the Cinque Ports prior to its silting in the 16th century.
